Maundy Thursday Tenebrae

  • White Plains Presbyterian Church 39 North Broadway White Plains, NY, 10601 United States (map)

THE SERVICE OF TENEBRAE focuses on Christ’s trial, crucifixion, and burial. As the Scriptures are read, the lights in the sanctuary are gradually dimmed, symbolizing the manner in which all of those surrounding Christ deserted him, until the only remaining light is the Christ candle. Following the last reading, the Christ candle is carried from the sanctuary, a door is slammed symbolizing the stone that was rolled against the opening of the tomb in which Jesus was buried, and the sanctuary is left in total darkness. This utter darkness is a metaphor for what the world would be like without God. The church bell is rung thirty-three times (one for each year of Jesus’ life). The Christ candle will next be seen at our Easter services. The sanctuary is left open for the evening and you may stay if you wish. When you leave, please be mindful of those who remain.
